Recent and upcoming investment in Mexico

  • Steel: Mexican steel products maker Deacero reported plans to invest approximately US$600 million to expand operations through 2024. Resources will support acquisition of new machinery and equipment, improved sustainability practices and increased production capacity to serve increasing demand from “nearshoring” manufacturing operations in Mexico.   • Electrical: U.S. electrical products developer Panduit inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in the northeastern state of Nuevo León. The amount of investment was not specified for the site, which is expected to produce make-to-order (MTO) electrical and network infrastructure components for regional industries.   • Metal machining: Japanese-owned industrial components maker Sumitomo Drive Technologies inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in the northeastern state of Nuevo León, the company reported. The US$12 million facility includes machining centers to produce metal components for power transmission equipment. (Mexico Industry, September 9, 2022)
  • Batteries: Chinese-Mexican photovoltaic panel maker Solarever announced projected investment of US$1 billion to establish a new manufacturing plant in the western state of Jalisco. The new facility is planned to produce batteries for electric vehicles. (El Economista, September 12, 2022)
  • Food processing: U.S. confectionery and baked goods producer Hershey reported plans to expand manufacturing operations at its plant in the northeastern state of Nuevo León.   • Airports: Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) initiated works to expand and upgrade the company’s international airport at the Pacific coast resort city of Puerto Vallarta. The US$350 million program will include a new passenger terminal, eight new telescopic jetways and emissions reducing technology, the company reported. (Reforma, August 30, 2022)
  • Coatings: U.S. based PPG Industries, owner of Mexico’s Comex paint brand, announced plans to upgrade its production plant in the central state of Querétaro. The US$11 million improvement program is expected to double output of powder coatings at the facility. (Diario de Querétaro, August 24, 2022)
  • Aerospace: European aerospace manufacturer Airbus reported plans to expand production at its plant in the central state of Querétaro. Investment was not specified for the program, which is expected to increase output of doors for A320 and A321 aircraft by 12% through 2026. (Reforma, August 30, 2022)
  • Food processing: Swiss processed foods giant Nestlé is projecting investment of approximately US$128 million to modernize production plants in the central state of Querétaro, the state government reported. The upgrades are expected to include software systems as well as technologies to improve water and energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. (El Economista, August 28, 2022)
  • Automotive: French metal components multinational Le Bélier inaugurated a new production plant in the central state of Guanajuato, the company reported.   • Food processing: Spanish pizza marketer Food Delivery Brands inaugurated a new production and administrative facility in the central state of Querétaro, the company reported. The US$8.5 million site, expected to produce pizza dough for the company’s Pizza Hut restaurants in the country, includes refrigerated and freezer warehousing, packaging operations, raw materials handling and shipping infrastructure.   • Manufacturing: Japanese air conditioning multinational Daikin plans to establish a manufacturing plant in the central state of San Luís Potosí, the state government reported. The US$230 million facility is expected to produce energy-efficient air conditioning units for the U.S. market. (Cluster Industrial, July 25, 2022)
  • Retail: Mexican grocery and general merchandise retailer Grupo Chedraui plans to open approximately 100 new Smart & Final grocery stores in Mexico, the company reported. Chedraui currently operates 17 Smart & Final stores in northwestern Mexico in partnership with regional grocery retailer Grupo Calimax. (Reforma, July 27, 2022)
  • Railroad: U.S.-owned rail freight operator Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM) reported plans to invest up to US$195 million to construct a railway bypass in the central state of Guanajuato. The new track will allow KCSM to provide freight services in the region without passing through the central zone of the city of Celaya. (El Economista, July 21, 2022)
  • Brewing: French malt producer Malteurop is projecting completion of a new malting plant in the northern state of Chihuahua at a total cost of US$120 million, the company reported. The site is expected to produce 120,000 tons of malted barley annually for the Heineken brewery in the area. (Cluster Industrial, July 26, 2022)
